Visions During Meditation: Meaning and Guidance

What does it mean to see visions during meditation? Should we try to block them out or make them go away, or is it possible to encourage them and hear their messages? Read on for a clear answer, informed by firsthand experience and the 5 Reiki Principles.

As background, my name is Lillie, and I’ve been a Reiki Master since 2018. I also have a passionately dedicated personal meditation practice, having done numerous forms of meditating every single day for many years. The concepts I will share here are somewhat counter to popular belief, but I hope this story of my real, lived experience will help illuminate a different view.

Visions During Meditation

Traditionally when people are taught to meditate, they are coached to try to clear their mind, letting thoughts drift by as clouds, then releasing them to try to achieve an empty, resting brain. Here’s my pushback to that framework: Just as with visions during Reiki, I believe that any images you see pop up behind closed eyes during meditation are coming up because your body needs to process them — so they should be WELCOMED, followed, and listened to.

How does one do this? As you’re meditating, just let whatever images, scenes, or memories that surface float to your mind’s eye and watch them. Let them develop on their own. If you see meditation colors, note those as well, and gaze upon them as one would upon a lava lamp, letting them relax you.

After your session, journal, think, or talk with someone about what the images and aura colors you saw could be telling you about next steps in life. Here’s an example of how a set of visions during meditation guided me on my path forward…

A Real-Life Example

Several years ago, I began starting daily meditation through a chanting app in a practice that I continue to this day. At this time I had been studying Reiki, but did not have the confidence nor vision for how I could ever open my own studio for actual paying customers.

That morning, I began my meditation as usual. I remember sitting on the pale yellow rug (significant, given the yellow aura meaning) just as the sun was rising, and began my chanting. Suddenly, I saw a vision behind my closed eyes: Me as a successful Reiki practitioner with my own studio, and countless satisfied clients. I followed the scene with interest, watching, and feeling it deeply.

I attribute this vision during meditation that day to giving me the confidence to begin searching for a local studio I could rent to launch my business. It was the turning point. I’m thrilled to report that much of that vision has indeed come true in the form of my Boston Reiki studio, once I accessed the image in my mind’s eye!

As you can see, visions during meditation can be extremely powerful in understanding and changing your life for the better. Rather than just noticing images and memories behind your closed eyes and letting them drift away, I encourage you to gaze upon them, listen as they send gentle messages and make requests of your path forward, and allow them to send their messages.
