As background, my name is Lillie and I’ve been a Reiki Master since 2018, doing hands-on, in-person appointments with hundreds of clients over the years. My thoughts in this article stem from firsthand experience, as well as numerous certification trainings.

Reiki Breathing for Cleansing

So here is my breath work tip. (It might seem simple, but it has made a world of difference in my Reiki practitioner cleansing world.) It is: Focus on breathing all the way OUT. Here’s why…

The Power of the OUT Breath

When we think about breathing deeply or cleansing breaths, we often overly focus on breathing IN. The problem with that is that our lungs then tend to get over-full of stale air, and there’s no chance to fully empty them and reset. This can even cause feeling worse after Reiki!

In contrast, when we focus on the OUT breaths, the negative energy and staleness can be released, and the “in” breaths will come naturally. As I explained in my article about “Reiki massage,” energy work is about gentle hand placements that help energy flow, and breath-work is an essential component of this.

Therefore, an essential foundation of supporting clients (besides encouraging them in making requests for what they need) is to coach them as follows, whenever we commence a session: “For the next two breaths, focus on breathing all the way OUT.”

If you’re a Reiki receiver who is reading this article, you can do this work yourself, whether or not the practitioner guides you — and even if you’re just at home and not in a studio. Focusing on breathing OUT at least once or twice in a row makes a huge difference in boosting the effectiveness of the session, and in everyday elements of life such as insomnia help and stress relief.

Don’t Be Afraid to Make Noise

While focusing on the OUT breath, don’t be afraid to make a “whoosh” or even loud sighing sound — it really helps! As a Reiki practitioner, I wear a mask so that I’m able to breathe intensely without getting it all over the client — but I do breathe audibly enough that they can hear it, and I’ve found it helps them relax, themselves, to hear me so fully into the breath work. (See “Coughing During Reiki” for more about other kinds of sharp exhalations.)
