Reiki, Menstruation, and Periods: What to Know

We know from the article “What is Reiki” that Reiki is a form of energy work that uses gentle touch or the hovering of hands to help relax the body and unblock chakras. So, what should we know about the interplay between Reiki and menstruation cycles — both as a recipient of energy work, and a practitioner during a woman’s period?

As background, I am a woman named Lillie who has been a Reiki practitioner since 2018. I have done hands-on energy work with hundreds of clients over the years, and am also a Reiki trainer. All the analysis in this article comes from first-hand experience, as well as trainings and research.

Reiki During Periods: Benefits

When people ask if they should avoid giving or receiving Reiki during their period, I reply, “Not necessarily.” Why? Well, one of the benefits of Reiki is that it helps the body relax, which can sometimes help with cramping and other menstrual side effects.

For example, for those of us who have strong emotional ups and downs during our cycle, chakra balancing energy work (including Reiki, acupuncture, and others) can help us process thoughts and steady our mood. Menstruation is also a time many of us crave comfort and maternal-style touch, and Reiki certainly fits the bill for that — both for giving and receiving.

Menstruation and Reiki: Cautions

That said, I do want to be honest that Reiki during menstruation can be problematic. Speaking for myself, whenever I give Reiki therapy during the one heaviest and most cramp-y day of my period, I tend to feel like I’m in a haze, and my results with clients are not as impressive or clear as every other day of the month.

Why might that be? Well, in my case, I know that I draw a lot of my energetic power from my Second Chakra (associated with an orange aura), and let’s face it: during menstruation, that area is quite preoccupied!

So what is to be done? Since noticing this pattern for myself, I try to block off the heaviest days of my cycle from my Reiki booking calendar, so that whenever possible, I don’t see clients then — I just focus on rest, self-care, and even Self-Reiki.
